Zurich – the second most polite city in the world
|
Zurich is considered the second most polite city in the world, surpassed only by New York. |
Peoples' manners, as polled by Reader's Digest magazine in 35 cities worldwide, rated the following politeness
points:
- willingness to hold the door open for others,
- friendliness of shop assistants,
- and helpfulness in gathering spilled briefcase belongings.
More than 2000 cases were evaluated and points awarded.
The survey showed that good manners are found in rich and poor cities alike. The Reader's Digest found
particular impoliteness in Asian cities. Thus rating nine of them at the bottom of the list; Taipei; Seoul,
Kuala Lumpur and Mumbai. However, in many major European cities, politeness also is a foreign word. For
example, Moscow and Bucharest rank low in the polls and London places a disappointing 15th out of 35
considering their super-polite image. |
 |
The test also disproved that today's youth is impolite. People under 40 are the politest of all age groups
and those over 60 the least polite. Also, of those poles, women ranked higher than men in politeness. |
