Studying in Switzerland:
Swiss Universities

Part: 1 2

 Admission to Swiss Universities

Even if a foreign school certificate is recognized as sufficient for enrollment, the Swiss university-level institutions still reserve the right to grant admission. For instance, in certain fields of study (particularly medicine, pharmacy, chemistry, and more recently psychology) only a limited number of foreigners can be accepted. In the medical institutions, foreign applications are not likely to be considered.

The Universities also reserve the right to require an entrance examination in the chosen field of study. In all cases, adequate knowledge of the language of instruction is a prerequisite for admission. Most Swiss Universities hold a language examination for those with a foreign mother tongue. Minimum age for admission is 18.

How to proceed if you wish to study in Switzerland

In general, the following must be submitted together with the application:
- exact information as to the course of study desired
- certified copy of an equivalent of Swiss matriculation,
or copies of any college or university certificates
- examination marks together with an official statement
about the content of your studies
- detailed curriculum vitae

Personal appearance is required at the actual enrollment, which takes place at the beginning of each semester.

Immigration formalities

When you have received confirmation of acceptance by a Swiss University, please contact the Swiss Embassy or the appropriate Consulate for information on entry formalities for Switzerland. In general the following documents are requested:
- visa application form duly filled and signed
- 3 passport size photographs
- letter of admission from the Swiss institution and
confirmation that fees have been paid
- original passport
- proof of finance (from applicant or sponsor):
  a) bank statement
  b) letter from sponsor confirming sponsorship
  c) sponsor's passport
- written engagement to leave Switzerland after completion of the studies

Please note that the procedure takes up to two months and only applicants with good knowledge of German, French, Italian or English will be accepted.

Entrance examination to Swiss Universities

Candidates who either hold certificates which are only partly equivalent to the Swiss matriculation or who are asked by the University to take an entrance examination, can sit the examination in Fribourg. These examinations are held twice a year (in March-April and September-October).
A special course designed to prepare students for the entrance examination is held in Fribourg between October and July. The course fee is CHF 4,000.

Cost of Studies

Fees are between CHF 400 and CHF 1,400 per year.
Living expenses amount to at least CHF 15,000 per year (Swiss Universities do not provide on-campus accommodations).
